In recognition of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the League of Women Voters of Brown County invites you to join us for a special Annual Meeting program and dinner featuring two outstanding local voices in history and civic engagement.

Featured Speakers:

Emily Lewellen teaches Dual Credit American History and Dual Credit Government and Politics at Brown County High School. She holds a master’s degree in History from Northern Arizona University and has been teaching for 13 years. Her work in the classroom has earned statewide recognition, including being named Indiana VFW Teacher of the Year (2018) and Gilder Lehrman American History Teacher of the Year for Indiana (2021). Last year, she and her student Genevieve Laguna were selected to participate in the Young People’s Continental Congress in Philadelphia, an immersive program exploring the history and legacy of the First Continental Congress. Later this month, Emily’s new book, The Dictionary of the United States Government, will be available at major bookstores.

Joining her is Genevieve Laguna, a senior at Brown County High School and an accomplished student leader. Genevieve serves as President of the National Honor Society and President of the BCHS History Club. She has participated in National History Day for seven years and was selected to attend the Young People’s Continental Congress in Philadelphia this past summer. Genevieve plans to study History and Government at Harvard University beginning this fall.

Together, Emily and Genevieve will share insights from their experience studying the origins of American democracy and reflect on the importance of civic education as our nation approaches its 250th anniversary.

We hope you will join us for this engaging and timely conversation. You can find more details and register for the dinner at The Seasons Conference Center on May 2nd at 6pm on our website here. We look forward to celebrating this historic milestone together.

2026 Primary Calendar

Oppose the SAVE Act Suite of Bills

Congress continues to introduce bills that would require voters to present documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) to register and/or vote, including the SAVE America Act, the Safeguard Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act), and the Make Elections Great Again Act (MEGA).

The SAVE Act would create one more barrier to the voting process, as many eligible voters do not have easy access to the necessary documents.

Tell Congress to reject anti-voter policies
